If you are looking for accommodation and need to check the transportation options before making a decision, check the following locations (in order):

1. East Newark and Harrison (theoretically you could walk, but practically not)
2. Elizabeth / Newark Airport
3. Kearny (plenty of Rutgers shuttles) - https://ipo.rutgers.edu/sites/default/files/ru-newark_kearnysched_032020temp.pdf
4. Jersey City
5. Bloomfield
6. Hoboken (plenty of restaurants and places to take your date!)

If you have a car, it's better to move westward.

NJTransit - https://www.njtransit.com/

Newark Transit - https://ipo.rutgers.edu/dots/newark

NJIT students get a discount on NJTransit passes.

Everything is at a distance of 10-20 minutes but that's because the roads are good and the average speed on all freeways is around 100 kmph. If you have private transportation, you can choose any location as west as West Orange or Parsippany or even on the border of PA to save money on the rent.
